Results by Nittany Valley Running Club

It was a beautiful late fall day for the First Annual Give ‘Em 5 Run for Veterans, benefiting the
Veterans Assistance Fund.

Gold Star Mother Denise McCombie and her husband Ryan served as race Grand Marshals, and the
112 Stryker Brigade was on hand with a Humvee. Two Vietnam veterans – Richard Kissinger in his
WWII Jeep and Perry Haines on his motorcycle – led a field of 74 runners through the 5 mile course in
Bellefonte. 40 walkers completed the 5K walk.

Elijah Shekinah led from the beginning and won the race in 28:33. In addition to a trophy, he took
home an engraved KA-BAR knife donated by Keystone Armory for being the first veteran. Alan Effrig
kept Elijah in sight for much of the race and finished in 29:22. Bellefonte cross country runner Mitch
Smith was third in 31:12.

A State College cross country runner, 14-year-old Tatum Del Bosco, won the women’s race in 33:02.
Katie Davis was next in 34:45, followed by Anna Shamey in 35:14.

Following the race, participants enjoyed a feast including hot dogs, soup, cider, apples, pizza, and
baked goods, served by Boy Scout Troop 370.

The race committee included Gerald Lyons, who had the idea to start a race in Bellefonte benefitting
veterans in need, race director Tara Murray, Holly Serface, Sara Carlson, Kim Gasper, Bill Fleeger,
Sally Wetzell, Deloris Brobeck, Fred Koch, Chris Ramish, Mike Kuhns, Walter Mayes, Nevin Long,
and Randy Rockey.
