Adult Volunteers Needed for the Nittany Track and Field Youth Club |
Nittany Track and Field (NTF) youth track club can use more volunteers for kids track practice. Normally this involves helping the main coaches to look after groups of kids during a workout. It does not require a special coaching experience, but can help you to develop one.
This year is a little bit different for NTF: we have an unusually high percentage of beginners, and a lot of young kids (ages 8 to 10) who typically need more supervision and personal encouragement than middle- or high-schoolers. Total of 70 athletes are currently registered and we expect some more. It is an extremely enthusiastic and fun crowd, and you will not regret the experience. We meet every night Monday through Thursday at the High School track from 6:15 to 7:45 pm.
Even coming one night per week would be a great help for us, as it gives us more flexibility staffing the practice.
We also welcome high school students who have track team experience and would like to volunteer sharing their skills with youngsters.
If you are interested in helping out, please send me an e-mail at mvf3@psu.edu.

The club often has a need for volunteers at local races, track and field events, organizing weekend runs, etc. If you have some free time your help would be very much appreciated! It's fun too! |

Club Meetings |
As always, the club seeks your participation at general club meetings. The meetings are normally held at the Hi-Way Pizza on Westerly Parkway. The schedule is on the NVRC Meetings page. If you're interested in what we do at these meetings besides eat pizza and drink beer, an agenda will be posted a week or two before the meeting. If you would like to help out, but can't attend the meeting, contact Jerry Steffy. You'll hear of plenty of opportunities to participate at the club meetings, but a few current areas where we need immediate help are listed below. |

Weekend Group Runs |
In the summer of 2003, the NVRC started announcing regular Saturday morning runs, and they have been working out well. The group run calendar now generally has one or more runs on both days of any given weeknd. And there will often be a group run on non-weekend holidays. We do rely on having someone act as the leader for each run. This just involves choosing a meeting place and some sort of plan for the run -- typically, something like "meet at Rec Hall at 8.30 a.m. to cover 6-10 miles at a relaxed pace" -- and spreading the word via the website and the NVRC Yahoo group.
You don't need any special qualifications to do this! Basically you are promising to show up and lead the way so no one gets lost or has to run alone. We usually get between 4-12 people on the weekend runs.
If you are willing to help out, please email Marty Mazur (mxm14@psu.edu). You can also post a note to Yahoo (NVRC@yahoogroups.com). There's info on dates that folks have already signed up for at the Group Runs page. |
