After a multi-year hiatus, the Nittany Valley Running Club brought back the NVRC Race Series Cup in 2008. Old-timers may recall that in the 1980s the Club had a race series where points were given for race participation and performance. The main difference between the old and the new Series is that there are now competitions for both the Race Series Cup and for Volunteer of the Year.
The 2011 competition was another in a string of close races. Alan Effrig, who had taken third place the last two years, finally won the Series Cup. Alan followed closely by Marty Mazur, a newcomer to the upper ranks. Third place went to Christine Rodgers, the 2009 winner. Dave Eggler still surpasses everyone's points in the volunteer standings, and has been excluding himself from the prize categories for the last few years. This year Marty Mazur and Mike Casper also stepped back from awards consideration. The Volunteer of the Year Award went to KathyKoetje-Simin who, besides volunteering at numerous races, put on this year's Jeremy Herbstritt 5K. Second place went to Tara Murray, director of the Give 'Em 5 race for Veterans, and third went to associate race timer Cheryl Capone.
The 2012 NVRC Race Series began with the 2011 First Night Resolution Run 5K on December 31, 2011. Race points and volunteer points will be tracked and awards for Race Series Cup winner and Volunteer of the Year for 2012 will be given at the regular club meeting in February 2013.
