NVRC Series History

Old-timers may recall that in the 1980s the Club had a race series where points were given for race participation and performance. After a multi-year hiatus, the Nittany Valley Running Club brought back the NVRC Race Series Cup in 2008. The main difference between the old and the new Series is that there is now a Volunteer Awards category as well as a competition for the Race Series Cup.

From 2008 through 2012, prizes were awarded only to the top point-getters in both the Race Series Cup and a Volunteer of the Year competitions. Starting in 2013, the competitive aspect of the Volunteer Awards was eliminated. Volunteer Awards are given to all volunteers who accumulate enough points according to the awards schedule found here. In addition, non-competitive individual achievement awards are given to all runners in the Race Series who accumulate enough points according to the awards schedule.

The 2012 Race Series

The 2012 competition for the Race Series Cup broke tradition. Alan Effrig ran away from the competition to repeat as this year's Series winner. Second place went to Meira Minard, who frequently finishes in the top 3, but has not yet won the Cup. Tara Murray was a close third this year for her first time in the top 3. The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Cheryl Capone. Cheryl is on the Club's executive council, is one of the Club Timers, volunteers at numerous races, ran the Club Elections, and has been the Apparel Coordinator  for the last two years. Second place went to John Wilcock, a member of the Executive Council and a frequent race volunteer, who has also been the data administrator for the Race Series for 5 years.Third place went to Marty Klanchar, the NVRC Membership Director, who also directs the Indoor Mile Series and volunteers at several races.

The 2013 Race Series

The 2013 NVRC Race Series begins with the 2012 First Night Resolution Run 5K on December 31, 2012. Race points and volunteer points will be tracked and awards for Race Series Cup winner and Volunteer Awards for 2013 will be given at the regular club meeting in February 2014.
