The purpose of the Nittany Valley Running Club is to establish a sound, continuing program of youth and adult fitness, to promote development and competition for all age groups, and to conscientiously prepare athletes for competition.

Jeremy's Race

On April 16, 2009, nearly 300 runners and walkers congregated at the intersection of University Drive and Pollock Road to participate in this five-kilometer event in celebration of the life of Jeremy Michael Herbstritt. Ironically enough, this location is precisely where Jeremy often began his ritual evening run accompanied by friends.
Jeremy graduated from PennState in 2003, earning an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology with a minor in chemistry. He later returned to pursue a second bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering, graduating in 2006. On April 16, 2007 Jeremy was murdered in Norris Hall at Virginia Tech while attending an Advanced Hydrology course as part of his graduate education.
Sponsored by PennState’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and organized by Julie Grubb and Mike Casper, Jeremy’s Race turned out to be a total success.
The weather was pleasant for spring, void of rain and surprisingly warm. Under blue skies, just minutes before the race began, Michael Herbstritt, Jeremy’s father, stood proudly in front of the crowd of runners. As his voice cracked, he pleaded with all in attendance to remember Jeremy. With a glimmer of hope in his eyes, he also spoke of his family’s desires to one day use the money raised from this event to help fund a track for the Bellefonte community.
Soon thereafter, Jeremy’s paternal grandfather, Thomas Herbstritt, started the race.
Many runners and walkers alike traveled considerable distances to participate in this noteworthy event. Just the same, a number of PennState students and members of the Nittany Valley Running Club participated and/or volunteered.
Thirty-plus pizzas, donated by Papa John’s of State College, and an assortment of bagels and pastries, donated by Irving’s Bagels, were ready for consumption at the end of the race. No one left hungry.
An awards ceremony followed and as nightfall drew near, approximately fifty people congregated on the front lawn of the IntramuralBuilding to share in a candle lighting ceremony in memory of Jeremy and the other thirty-two lives lost so senselessly on that tragic day. Father Matthew, of Campus Ministries, led the service. Jeremy’s siblings, friends and cousins spoke bittersweet words of encouragement and hope. Both his uncle and cousin played the guitar while those in attendance sang in accord.
The event was beautiful. Raised was just over five thousand dollars, which will be used to help fund a track for the Bellefonte community.
The only thing missing was Jeremy.
The Herbstritt Family would like to thank those who attended, volunteered and were with us in spirit for Jeremy’s Race. A special thank you goes out to Julie Grubb (race director), Mike Casper, the PennState Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Peggy Johnson, Papa John’s pizza, Irving’s Bagels, the NittanyValley Running Club, Dave Eggler and the Office of Physical Plant personnel.
