Will Appman is on fire! A week after he PRed by 6 seconds to set a new NVRC Indoor Mile Series record by 0.15 seconds, he tore another 5 seconds off his previous best, in the process becoming the first Indoor Mile Series runner to go under 4:20. Appman lead from the start and it was obvious what he was gunning for. He set an even pace and was under 2:10 at the half. Then he got a really determine look on his face and it was clear he was not going to let the dreaded third quarter jinx bite him. Appman ran negative splits to finish in 4:18.34, still looking strong on his final kick. He's got almost two weeks to rest before assaulting the record books again. Garrett Derringer looked good on his first Indoor Mile of the season, finishing second in 4:28.87. And Matt Doutt was third in 4:33.10. Thirteen of the seventeen runners in the fast heat were under 5 minutes. Also in the fast heat, Lauren Philbrook made her first appearance in an Indoor Mile in two years, shaking off the cob webs and finishing in a very respectable 5:16.43. She's got the fastest female time of the year so far and will look to do even better. The fast heat also had probably the closest finish ever in an Indoor Mile Series race. Ken Roman and Sean Dooling dueled to the end, with Roman nipping Dooling by 0.01 seconds to finish 10th overall in 4:51.53.

The "slow heat" probably saw even more runners improving their times from the previous week. Jaimie Wright made her first Indoor Mile Series appearance and had a mile-long battle with Indoor Mile veteran Tara Murray. Wright let Murray set the pace and then found a new gear at the start of the gun lap, passing Murray and putting a few yards between them. But Murray wasn't done and fought back on the final stretch to come within 0.4 seconds of catching Wright. After the race, Tara said she wished the race were 50 yards longer. Jaimie won the heat in 5:50.91. Tara was second in 5:51.28, bettering her time from Indoor Mile #1 by over 3 seconds and closing on a PR that is about 2 seconds faster. Third place went to Alex Wouden, who had no idea coming in what his mile pace would be. He penciled himself in for 7:30, but found that he's pretty close to a sub-6 miler, coming in at 6:02.35. Another first-timer who gave a conservative pre-race estimate was Mark Staub. His 8-minute pre-race estimate was off by well over a minute as he finished in 6:49.89. Marty Mazur again set the pace for runners in the "back row" and he and they all improved over last week. Mazur shaved nearly half a minute off his pacing time of last week to finish in 6:57.91. David Lloyd might want to start thinking of sub-7 as he took nearly 20 seconds off his time of last week to finish in 7:14.62. Leah Brandt will no doubt get faster than her 7:24.14 finish as she figures out how to run more even splits. And Aisling Ryan is improving from her calf strain and closing in on a PR as she ran 8:14.79

The next Indoor Mile is on Friday, January 25.
