January 10, 2015

It was beautiful, sunny, and brutally cold outside, and that meant air as dry as toast for the first Indoor Mile Series meet of 2015. Turnout was a little light, in terms of numbers, and for the first time in years no female runners toed the line (Though there were a few females who scratched). But light turnout did not mean light talent.

In the first heat, Judd Michael was there, at least at first, to set a pace for those who might attempt sub-6. At the half-mile, he was right on pace at about 2:58, but looking over his shoulder he did not see anyone wanting to keep up with that challenge (apparently Tony Pszeniczny was in his blind spot and Michael Goldfine, who usually runs a stronger second half-mile, was about 5 seconds back). So Judd pushed the pace hard in the second half, winning in 5:38.02. Tony Pszeniczny kept up well until the last 400, finishing second in 5:47.34. Michael Goldfine ran a fast second half and was third in 6:03.33. Adam Ilgen ran his first ever track mile in a great time of 6:28.19, and looks forward to building on that.

In the second heat, Nikita Fedkin, Michael Zimmerman, Mathew Poynton, and Bob Shafer all took turns challenging for the lead. Fedkin had the best kick, winning in 5:14.15. Zimmerman was close in 5:16.64. And Poynton and Shafer went down to the wire for third, with Poynton edging Shafer by 0.08 seconds to take third in 5:21.24.

Will Appman is the 2013 Series winner and Series record holder for combined best two miles in one season. But he did not run the Series last year. He had his work cut out for him on his return visit. Masters standout Dan Pszeniczny was on Appman's tail the entire race, and briefly held the lead in the last quarter. But Appman's youth won in the kick, as he crossed the finish line in 4:31.91. Pszeniczny was second in 4:32.97. Doug Jordan was a distant third in 4:40.76. Steve Williams was the next Masters runner to finish, and ran a sub-5 (4:59.34). Last year, it took Williams a couple of meets to hit that mark, so he's off to a good start.

The next Indoor Mile Series meet is next Saturday, January 17, at 11 AM. The men who showed up for this week's meet know where they are and what they need to do to get to their goals. The challenge is out there for the women to make a first showing.
