2007 Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile #3

by Marty Mazur

The third Indoor Mile Series Races began auspiciously. A record number of runners, nearly 40, had registered to run in two heats of the mile and a heat of teh 3000. But three of the runners for the 3000 did not show up, one decided just to do the mile, and the last didn't want to run the event alone, so the 3000 was cancelled. We'll give it a go next meet. In the mile races, everyone was ready to run new PRs, achieve season goals, and just have a great time. And quite a few improvements were recorded. But a number of runners also re-learned the old lesson that you usually don't get better every time you race, but sometimes take a step back before improving again. A two week rest will help everyone regain their fire.

In the fast heat, Sean Clark took first in 4:45. Tim Aydin, who ran well for State High several years ago, nonetheless turned in a lifetime PR to finish 2nd in 4:48. Kyle Gheres was 3rd a second behind. And Andy Mazur, another recent State High grad, continued his comeback by posting his first sub-5 performance since his high school days. Judd Michael was the fastest Masters runner, finishing 5th in 5:06. Lance Bland was 3 seconds back of that. Louis Miltich was the fastest female of the day (and of the season, so far), finishing just 0.02 seconds behind Tim Yosca in a photo finish in 5:37.95.

The second heat saw Meira Minard, take first place in 5:40. She took a step back from her best time, but still has a good shot at the female series crown. Joel Niemann chopped off 8 seconds from his previous performance to finish in secondin 5:44. Long-time series participant Marty Lanchar clocked one of his best miles ever to take third in 5:53, just edging Erin Wyble who has made significant improvement since the first race of the series. The rest of the heat learned some lessons about how improvements do not always come in a linear fashion. Marty Mazur led the sub-6 hopefuls on a great pace through the first half-mile, but walked off the track with a sore hamstring. Losing their pacemaster caused some of the near-6 brigade to drop off a bit.
The 6:30+ crowd struggled a bit, but Kurt Schwab is edging closer to 7 minutes. And they'll all be back to renew the attack.

Heat 1 leaders late in the race: From right to left, heat winner Sean Clark, eventual third place Kyle Gheres, eventual second Tim Aydin, and fourth place Andy Mazur.

Masters duel: Lance Bland, left, leads Judd Michael, center, as they pass Matt Fisher. Judd eventually passed Lance.
Early in the second heat, Meira Minard leads John Lacombe, Joel Nieman, Erin Wyble, and the rest of the crew.

Vicki Summers shows her determination as she hears race leader Meira Minard's footsteps coming to lap her.
