Arts Fest 2010
Sue Crowe Memorial Arts Festival 5K and 10K, 2010
What is “Arts Festival weather?” Hot and humid. For a week or more before the 2010 Arts Festival, the weather was humid and very hot, in the 90s. Running was a chore. But Saturday and Sunday of Arts Festival week were decidedly different. Sunday, race day, saw a high for the DAY of 82 and moderate humidity. Turnout was great, with 610 registrants and 580 finishers. For that the NVRC is grateful, because the race supports its programs and grants to youth running.
Click here to read Tara Murray’s CDT story on the race. The story features the Brooker brothers of Spring Mills. Matt ran a nice 10K race, and Jud won the 5K for the second time, coming close to his 2007 event record of 16:31.
Thanks to our main sponsor, University Orthopedics, for underwriting the shirts. Thanks to Centre Communications for radios, Rapid Transit for bags, the State College Spikes for the ballpark venue, the Convention and Visitors Center for our pre-race headquarters, ProCopy for applications, and Roaring Spring for the bottles of water that should have been waiting at the finish line (The Great Disappearing Bottled Water Fiasco; don’t ask!).
And now the volunteers, who stepped forward in large numbers: Pre-registration desk: Jim Quigel, Marty Klanchar, and Lance Bland. Packet stuffing: Meira Menard, Dave Mengel, Kathy Simin and daughter, Amy Blake and daughters, Kim Nelson, and Mike Casper, who sat on a chair with his foot in a brace and assembled boxes. Race-day registration, awards, and cleanup: Marty Klanchar, Mary Conner-Righter, Jeff Johnson, Amy Paster, Bryanna and Keiryn Ziegler, Mark Fedkin, and Paul Lammert. Paul, Bryanna, and Keiryn then maintained a water station set up at the finish line in lieu of the bottles, Mark went to the corner of Shortlidge and Curtin, and Mary led the 10K runners on her bike. IST water station: Howard Fescemeyer and family and Amy Blake with her husband Michael and niece Marissa Castro. Shortlidge Plaza water station: MaryAnn Williams and Ed Gannon. Mike Weyandt picked up the food. Corner of Burrowes and Pollock: Cheryl Capone and son.
Pam Scott directed the Kids Races in spite of a foot in a cast, assisted by Jerry Steffy, Michelle Christensen, Denise Weaver, Mary Conner-Righter, Kim Nelson, Steve and Carol Gentry, and Meira Minard.
