2010 Tussey Teaser #1 - Tussey Switchbacker 10K
7th annual Laurel Run Switchbacker 10K
March 13, 2010
By Mike Casper
Kudos to Mike Philippe, who braved the elements as much as any runner to direct on this day that kicked off the 2010 Tussey Teasers series. Spring was still a week away, so Ma Nature dished out shoe-sogging rain and bone-chilling wind as a heady addition of adverse elements to the long climb on the front end of this run. Recalled Mike: “Took me about 20 minutes to warm up after the start—in my car!” There was still ice on the upper switchback near the summit.
Thirty-six runners faced the
challenge head on. The rain didn’t bother Pat Singletary much, as
he cruised in within 14 seconds of his 2009 time to take first. A few
runners even improved their times from last year, including Greg Luna,
Jim Myers and Jeannie Peters, and several finished within a minute or
two of last year’s time. Travis Cain was second among the men and
Martijn Westhoff third. Michele Glasgow led the ladies on the course,
followed by Tara Murray and Peters.
At the finish, Mike P. had to run his wipers to see approaching runners and keep his window up to keep the paperwork dry. There were door prizes, but divvying them out on-site was not very practical, so Mike got creative and used an online site and bib numbers to select winners:http://www.random.org/. A $25 gift card from Hoss’ goes to Ben Farahani. Rita’s Italian ice certificates go to Martijn Westhoff and Julie Sutsko.
All runners who turned out for this one are currently eligible for the series “grand” door prize, which will go to someone who completes all five Teasers. Every runner who does all five runs gets a prize.
Thanks again to Mike P. and to all who came out. The next Teaser is the Tussey to Whipple 11 Miler on April 10. We hope to see many of you back – and perhaps even more agreeable weather.
