Rain dampened turnout a bit, but those who came out crowed about the event and the unique 5-mile course.

Seth Senior dominated the men’s race in his first foray at the 5-mile run. Patrick Singletary has run all but one of the nine Linden Loop 5 Milers, and won the race five times, but it was not in the cards today. Senior’s time won, and was just 31 seconds shy of the course record.

“Patrick and I ran the first two miles together,” recalled Senior, “and then I led the rest of the way. I really enjoyed the course – it makes for a fair and honest 5 miler. There are some good climbs, but the last few miles you can really open up your legs.”

The scenic run takes in pastoral countryside, including rolling farm fields and the picturesque, meandering Cedar Run that cuts through the valley between Brush Valley Road and Linden Hall Road.

Senior appreciated that aspect. “My favorite moment is running past the creek with the waterfall in the middle of the race. I would highly recommend the race to people, especially because a 5-mile distance isn't offered often.”

Melissa Horn won the women’s race, with Mariya Kadiev in second and Noelle Ulrich in third.

“This was my first time running this race,” said Horn. “I have done a few 5Ks around town and wanted to try a longer distance.” The race route struck a chord with her as well. “I loved the course. I live nearby and run it all of the time. I would definitely do the 5 miler again.”

One of the youngest to take on this course was ten-year-old Drew Kogelmann.

“I did not train for the race,” recalled Kogelmann, who does a lot of his running on soccer fields. “The furthest that I had run before is about 2 miles.” He said he liked the course and plans to run this race again.

A volunteer stationed at the school rang the school bell each time a participant turned the corner from Brush Valley Road onto Rock Hill Road.

Always the first Sunday in May, the Linden Loop also offers a 5-mile bike ride, 28-mile supported bike ride, and 5-mile walk event, and there are free tours of the Rock Hill School before and after these events.

Proceeds from the Linden Loop event support continued work at the historic Rock Hill School at Linden Hall. Initiatives this year include ongoing landscaping on the school building property. For more information, visit the school’s website at
