August 2, 2011

The August bimonthly meeting of the NVRC / Annual Picnic was held on August 2 at Spring Creek Park in Houserville. The weather was mild compared to the recent heat wave, and there was a threat of rain to come.

The Annual Picnic means not much business is on tap. Marty Mazur stood up with three Club volunteering related announcements. First, Jerry Steffy will be stepping down as NVRC President as soon as we can find a replacement. Jerry has been the NVRC President almost since he landed in town some six (?) years ago, along with serving the Club in other ways and being an assistant coach for the State High boys running programs. Jerry will still be active in the Club. I'll be putting out a separate email regarding this opportunity to serve the Club.

Second, our most volunteer-intensive Club event is fast approaching. That's the Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK 50 Mile Ultramarathon and Relay, which will be on Sunday, October 23. The race requires a small army of race day volunteers, but Race Director Mike Casper could also use some pre-race help over the next couple of monthts. Mike has occasional volunteer meetings at the Wegmans food court. The next one is tonight, August 3, at 6 PM. Stop by, or drop Mike an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you can help.

Third, the number of races that the NVRC times at low cost as a service to local races has increased dramatically over the years. Race Timer Dave Eggler could use some help so that we don't have to curtail this service for others and ourselves (or to end up having to pay a professional timing company for some of our smaller races). Cheryl Capone has been learning the job of race timing (the steepest part of the learning curve is the software) but the more people we have who know how to do it, the better we are in the long run. If you'd like to learn the ropes, contact Dave Eggler at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Emily Herring was in charge of picnic planning and did a great job. Thanks to Subway of State College for providing some enormous subs for the main course. Emily also got a few pizzas, and picnickers brought in side dishes and desserts. All in all, a very pleasant evening. Thanks for coming!

Next Meeting: October 4.
