Tussey Mountainback

The beginning of the NVRC meeting coincided with the end of the Tussey Mountainback post-race volunteer meeting, resulting in a record crowd for both meetings.

Race director Mike Casper thanked all who contributed to a successful 2012 event. Leslie Fenton, Executive Director of Tides, this year's race beneficiary, expressed her appreciation, and Marty Mazur, Communications Director for the NVRC, said that the Mountainback is a huge event for the club and that the club is happy to support it.

At the end of the NVRC meeting, Mike presented awards for the team and individual who raised the most money for Tides. Val's Gals, a team of 8 women, raised over $600, and team member won the individual award for raising over $1,500. Mike said that in its first year, the Mountainback (still a small race back in 2000) raised $500 for Friends of Rothrock. The race has grown considerably and last year raised $17,000 for the Bob Perks Fund. Mike then presented a check for $26,227 to Tides.

The 2013 Mountainback will be held on Oct. 20 and will once again host the USA 50 Mile Championships.

Nittany Valley Half Marathon

Marty Mazur congratulated Dave Eggler on directing the NVHM for the last time. Dave is stepping down as race director for the half, though he will continue to direct the First Night Resolution Run and Arts Fest races and serve as club treasurer and race timer. The race has grown quite a bit in the last few years. This year's total of nearly 700 runners didn't quite match the record participation of 2011, but it is still one of the largest local races and a bargain at $25. John Wilcock will take over as race director.

Mt. Nittany Marathon

It has been about 30 years since there was a marathon in State College. The NVRC is helping the Mt. Nittany Conservancy bring a marathon back to the area with the Mt. Nittany Marathon on Sept. 1. Race director and Mt. Nittany Conservancy President John Hook couldn't attend the meeting, but sent a written report:

  • Date reminder: September 1, 2013 -- a little less than nine months away!

  • Registrations are coming in and we have received them from as far away as Fredericksburg, VA. The form is available on the website. www.mtnittany.org.

  • If the NVRC would like to get a crew of ten together we are happy to offer a very special NVRC-only “10 x 10 x 10” discount – 10% off the registration price for ten applications submitted together by January 10, 2013. $45 registration fee instead of the normal $50! • Local runner (and coach of multiple time Olympic Trials qualifier Rebecca Donaghue) Artie Gilkes will serve as the “Official Trainer” for the Mt. Nittany Marathon and will begin a series of monthly written “Training Updates” to guide you to your first marathon or a PR. The first installment will be distributed on January 1 by email to all registrants and on the Marathon website. Monthly updates will follow and will get more frequent as the date gets closer.

  • Volunteer Committees will be forming in the next month and we will keep you updated in case anyone is interested.

Race Series

The race series winner and volunteer of the year will be presented at the February club meeting. John Wilcock is stepping down as series coordinator and will be replaced by a team including Alan Effrig and Jake Clements. The series scoring and awards will be modified to include more incentives for volunteering and participation.

Indoor Mile Series

The NVRC will once again hold four indoor mile races in conjunction with Penn State indoor track meets this winter. The races are free to club members and details will be posted soon.

NVRC Elections

Cheryl Capone announced results from the recent club elections. All five 2012 officers were running uncontested and were voted in to another term: Bob Crowe, President; Marty Mazur, Communications Director; Marty Klanchar, Membership Director; Dave Eggler, Treasurer; and Tara Murray, Secretary/Archivist.

Club Apparel

Marty Mazur and Cheryl Capone announced that the club has car magnets for sale for $2 and has purchased patches which will be applied to various running apparel items.
