2026 Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile #3

Despite a low turnout, the final meet of the 2026 NVRC Indoor Mile Series had some great races, including some season's bests. The Penn State Cross-Country Club usually shows up in force for the last meet. But last weekend they had a big annual fundraising event where Club members run on a treadmill for 46 hours. (I hope it's a relay!) The result was that quite a few of the Club members got the creeping crud and had to scratch today's event.
Because we run the 3000 meter run on the last meet, we usually push the fast heat of the mile up to heat 1 to give those who are participating in both races some time to rest. In the fast heat, Nathan Allen ran a Series season's best time of 4:27.87 to take first. This time also secured a Series First Place (best combined times in two series races). Josh Walters was second in 4:29.51, securing for him a Series Second Place. And Matthew Schwertfeger was third in 4:30.03.Kalyn Fisher was the fastest woman, finishing in 4:55.45 and securing a Series First Place.
The second heat had only three runners (due to a lot of scratches). First place went easily to Aidan Mozes in 5:09.08. Matt Smith was second in 5:49.52, and Marty Kowalski was third in 6:36.29.
The first three spots in the third heat were taken by women. Scarlet Davies was first in 6:11.45, followed very closely by Martina Drew in 6:11.91. Taylor Fein was third in 6:41.19.
The 3000 meter run saw the biggest come from behind victory of the day. At the start of the bell lat, Vince Fadale trailed Masters runner A J Kelly by over 20 yards. Despite Kelly's strong final lap, he could not hold off Fadale's blazing final lap. Fadale took the tape in 9:39.69. Kelly was second in 9:40.59 and Sam Moffett was third in 9:48.35. The two women in the 3K were Masters runner Mary Kowalski, who finished in 13:04.66 and PSU XC Clubber Lillie Nye, who finished in 13:14.33.
As usual, there was a Predicted Time Contest for the mile heats. Women's Series First Place finisher Kalyn Fisher took home some icing for the cake with a predicted time of 4:55 that was just 0.45 seconds off her finishing time.
Thanks to all for another great Series. See you all next year!
