The first year of the revived Knights of Columbus
5K race was a hit, despite the weather, Fall Break, and the
machinations
of a deranged squirrel. About 75 runners showed up on a partly cloudy
and
blustery Sunday afternoon. We're just not used to winter starting so
early,
at least lately. But I remember the previous Knights Race
incarnation...I
ran eight of them, and the weather ranged from 77 and sunny to 36 and
drizzle.
The turnout on Sunday nearly doubled the pre-registration count, and
might
have been a bit higher if the weather was more pleasant and if Penn
State
hadn't instituted this new thing called Fall Break.
The only snafu of the day was the result of the machinations of a deranged, and now deceased, squirrel. The rat-with-a-pretty-tail (as race co-director Vicky Mazur calls them) had made contact with something in the electrical box feeding the Knights Hall, knocking out the power. Early arrivals had to contend the smell of squirrel bacon and with groping to find the bathrooms, but Allegheny Power was summoned and power returned by 1:15.
Besides racing around like a chicken with his head cut off, co-director Marty Mazur spent most of the pre-race hour trying to recruit teams. We ended up with five, and we generated some interest for the upcoming team Lactic Acid race. We had just enough volunteers to cover the many bases (there are a lot of intersections to direct runners through on the Knights course). The race started just a couple of minutes late as the marshals raced to their positions on the course. Greg Fredericks, who is not new to arriving at races at the last second (and winning!), arrived just in time to help Carol Gentry at the finish line.
And we needed sharp eyes to judge some of the finishes! Julien Bernard nipped Rod Stahl by an eyelash to take first place overall. Both finished in 16:40. Note to Julien: watch your back...Rod did the race as the fast middle part of his long training run! Third went to Boyd Brumbaugh in 17:30. There were plenty of other close finishes, as a quick scan of the race results below will confirm. On the women's side, Therese Brown continues the State College tradition of mothers who blaze through race courses. The tradition starts with Sue Crowe, who owned the Art's Fest (and the Knights Race) for many years, and still won races after 6 kids. Therese has a way to go (only two little ones), but as long as she's in town, she will be the bane of other ladies on the course. She took first in 18:41. Second went to Andrea Young in 21:59, and third went to Kathy Heller in 22:15. The Men's Team Award went to...who else? The Old Fartleks, who were helped by the fact that Marty Mazur was not running. Their lead runner, Tom Cali took first in the 45-49 age group and 5th overall in 17:57. Brand new Fartlek Bill Bahnfleth took first in the 40-44 age group and 9th overall in 18:38. Other Old Fartleks were Gerry Glyde (1st in the 60-64 group), Bill Whittaker (3rd in the 50-54 group) and Steve Gentry (Good Sport Award). The Tri-Club only registered one team runner, and this will probably be the only way the Old Fartleks can beat them. The Women's Team prize went to the Latta Ladies, a team of Mom (Debra), who finished 3rd in the 40-44 group, and two daughters, Erinn, who finished first among 14-and-under girls, and her older sister, Aimee, who did not finish. The Cornstalks took the mixed team award, and the Stevens Family took second.
The awards ceremony was a lot of fun. Due to the generosity of our sponsors, we had some fine winner's prizes and door prizes. Marty remembered to thank the sponsors, and to mention the beneficiaries: The Tom Kleban Fund for a local athlete who was injured in a diving accident, and the Schlow Memorial Library Children's Dept. Tom Kleban circulated among the crowd with his congenial smile. Marty was much more nervous and forgot to thank the volunteers (see below). The race was a lot of fun and we're looking forward to it growing bigger next year.
Marty and Vicky Mazur would like to thank our sponsors again: Jim Hendrick and The Knights of Columbus, for use of the hall and a generous cash gift (Jim also got Allegheny Power to take care of the squirrel problem); Tom Cali and Re/Max, for a generous cash gift; Rapid Transit Sports for generous gift certificates and bags to hold all the shirts and goodies; Nittany Bank for some give-aways and some really nice prizes; Danone International for plenty of pure spring water; Barnes and Noble for a gift certificate; Boal Mansion and Columbus Chapel for a certificate for a group tour; Saints Coffee for a very nice bag of coffee related prizes; Weis Market for gift certificates,
We'd
also like to thank our volunteers by name: Dave
Eggler, Carol Gentry, Greg Fredericks, Mike Casper, Dan Eck and his
boys
Brandon, Cory, and Christian, Mike Casper, Nancy Cook, Marti Supina,
Shawn
Rogacs, Matt Beaugard, and Andy and Christina Mazur.
