• History: The Knights of Columbus 5K began in the late 1980s as a family oriented 5K run in a residential neighborhood of State College. After a 4 year hiatus from 1996 to1999, the Knights race was revived in 2000 and has been growing strong. And starting in 2005 the Knights Races included a free 1/4-mile and 1/2-mile races for kids 12 and under!
  

For 2006, the Knights Race got a new course and a new look. The new Knights race is a State College Adventure, incorporating bits of the old course, sections of the Orchard Park bike path, a piece of the State High Cross Country course, and even a dash of trail running! The course features a variety of running surfaces. It's mostly flat, but there are a couple of challenging hills. Because of the mild challenges the course sets, it's a great race for a beginners to take on for their first 5K. With special kids age groups, 5 year age groups for adults, and generous prizes, it's a great race for all!


• Race Day: The 2007 Knights of Columbus 5K was held on Sunday, October 14 at 2 PM.  It was a great Fall day and the race featured some fabulous finishes. See the results.
  
• Kids' Races: The Kids' Races are sponsored by Appalachian Outdoors, and held in Orchard Park near the finish line of the 5K. The 1/4-mile race is for kids 8 and under. The 1/2-mile race is for kids 12 and under. The races start at the completion of the 5K, at approximately 2:45. There are ribbons for all participants in the Kids' Races. Kids of any age can compete in the 5K, but must pay the race fee for that race.
• Beneficiaries: The Knights of Columbus 5K Race benefits the Schlow Centre Region Library Children's Department and the Tom Kleban Recovery Fund.
  
• Registration: Individuals: $12 if postmarked by September 29. $15 afterward. Families: Full fee for the first two members, $10 each additional runner. NVRC members subtract $1. 5K Race Application (pdf file). Kids' Races: The Kids' Races are free of charge! Please fill out the waiver for your child to participate.
• Age Groups and Awards: 5K: Overall 1st-3rd place men and women runners. 1st-3rd place for men and women runners in the following categories:  Youth: 12 and under, 13-16, 17-19  Adults: 20-24, and 5-year age groups through 80 and over. No awards to runners/walkers finishing after 50 minutes. 
• Course Information: Course Description, Map, and Elevation Profile for the adventure course is here. The course begins at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 850 Stratford Drive, State College, PA. The course ends in Orchard Park, two blocks from the Knights Hall. We're sorry, but because of the nature of the course, we can't allow runners pushing strollers. The race registration and awards ceremony will be in the Knights Hall. The facility has restrooms, but no showers.  The kids' races will be run in Orchard Park near the finish line of the 5K.
  
• Beginning Runner's Challenge: The Knights of Columbus 5K is the official NVRC Beginner's 5K. While runners of all abilities run the Knights race because its relatively easy course helps ensure a good finishing time, we will have special incentives for beginners to run the race. • Related Columbus Day Activities: Nearby Boalsburg, Pennsylvania is home to the Boal Mansion and Christopher Columbus Chapel. The Boal Mansion will be the site of a Columbus Weekend Festival. For more information, visit the Boal Museum web site.
