When news of the tragic death of Jeremy Herbstritt in the shootings at Virginia Tech reached Penn State, it was only a matter of hours before discussions began for a possible event to honor Jeremy. A native of Bellefonte, Jeremy had been pursuing graduate work in civil engineering at Virginia Tech. He had earned two undergraduate degrees from Penn State, one in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2003, and another in civil engineering in 2006. Time can fly or stand still when energies converge. Jeremy's energy was very present, so there was no doubt that the event would translate from idea to reality in just two weeks. Kris Murchie, a civil engineering student, and Jay Regan, an assistant professor of civil engineering, volunteered to turn the race into reality. Mike Casper, who had known Jeremy from his participation in the Tussey Mountainback, researched the race date and drafted an entry form, which was posted and disseminated the moment the green light came from the University on April 23. Kris dove headfirst into the strange new world of race directing while balancing her daunting academic work. As the end of the semester was near and many engineering students were scheduled to be away for ASCE Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions, it was very uncertain what kind of turnout the event might generate. The night before the race, there were only 89 pre-registrations. Then it happened. On race morning a groundswell of participants converged on the grass outside the Intramural Building to sign up. Volunteers innovated to process everyone's entry. Minutes later CE department head Peggy Johnson welcomed the crowd at the start, and Jeremy's father, Mike, gave a memorable greeting to all in attendance. Jeremy's immediate family members were all present, including his mother and siblings Jennifer, Joseph and Stephanie. Jennifer had been signed up to run a half marathon elsewhere on this day, but changed her plans to be here. When Kris gave the "go" signal, more than 400 runners and walkers took off for a 5K circuit under sunny skies with a gentle breeze. A number of NVRC and community volunteers helped out, including NVRC president Jerry Steffy and past president Jim Taylor. "He would have been the first in line if it would have been for something else," said Jeremy's aunt, Chris Meier, of DuBois. Mike Herbstritt said he hopes to take money donated to his family and one day build a track at Bellefonte Area High School, so the school district has its own facility. "That's one of our goals, a track that we can dedicate to Jeremy, so we can all run it in Jeremy's footsteps."
