Attendance
records were set at the 11th
annual
First Night State College 5K Resolution Run.
About 740 runners registered for the race, and 704 were recorded as
finishing,
both new records by far. Artie Gilkes,
former Penn State
runner and current Penn State
assistant track and
cross-country coach, almost equaled his course record time of last
year,
running two seconds slower than his 15:15 of last year. He might
have lost those two seconds in the
somewhat jammed start beside the giant ice sculptures at College and
Allen, the
“heart of State College,” or along one of the snowy and icy spots along
the
course. Martha Nelson, a Penn State
grad student, took her Goldilocks headgear into first place among women
in
18:43. Martha has won most of the local
races, but this was her first First Night.
She may have to declare another Martha Mile in celebration. Second
among men was another Penn State
student and frequent local race winner, Dave Moore, and third was
former
outstanding Penns Valley
runner Judson
Brooker. Second among women was an up-and-coming State College High
cross-country and track runner, Chloe Schmidt. Third was Emily
Ingle, a former PIAA track state champion at Tyrone and currently an
all-NEC cross-country runner at Robert Morris.
State College
was blanketed
with an inch and a half of snow the day before the race, but the
streets were
largely cleared of snow on race day, which saw temperatures in the
thirties.
The
best costume award went to four seniors from State
College High who dressed as Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
No
race takes place without volunteers. Out on the course, I thank
Mara Ziegler and
her girls, Bob, Christine, and Kellie Rice, Dean McHenry, Amy Paster,
Aimee
Eggler and Eric Juhn, and, for the umpteenth consecutive year, Carol
and Steve
Gentry. In the chute, Greg Fredericks,
Dean McHenry, Jason and Alexis Sitchler, and more. At
registration, which went smoothly despite
registering 300 new applications on race night and handling most of the
pre-registrants, Tom Cali, Tom Skibinski, Martha Nelson, Marvin Hall,
Greg, Aimee Eggler and Eric
Juhn, and
Lance Bland. Heidi Lewis and her girls
kept the food table in order. Vicki
Summers was everywhere on race night – registration and the chute, and
she
brought in the food. Everywhere also
were Dave DeGroote and Amy Paster, past NVRC president and current Arts
Festival race director. Amy and I have
wrapped up many First Nights and Arts Festivals with the final act,
after all
the race participants have disappeared – lugging the trash to the
dumpsters.
