5th Annual Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial 5K

Even though the rain was coming down during set up, the sun came out in time for race day registrations and motivated an extra 100 runners to come out and run. Luke Watson, sponsored by Mizuno, Honeymilk, and Powerbar, gave the "ready, set, go" and racers were off. The wind wasn't as forgiving as the rain and while runners enjoyed a tailwind as they started the race, they then had to face a headwind as the course turned around and came down Pollock. Overall Male was Mike Williams of State College, Overall Female was Alicia Revitsky of State College, and the Overall Team was Penn State Club XC.
After runners had refueled with post race food and beverage, a candlelight vigil was held to honor and remember Jeremy and others who have been victims of violence. Members of Jeremy's family led songs and readings as candle flames illuminated the lawn of the IM building. Jeremy's sister Jen, and Kathy then handed out overall and age group awards. Jeremy loved donuts so in addition to a regular award, each runner who placed also received a donut, generously donated by Weis. If you didn't stay to get your award, you missed your donut!
Many many many many (I could keep going with the "manys") thanks to my dear friends who volunteered and helped me navigate my way through coordinating my first race. I will take the blame for anything that wasn't satisfactory but none of the credit for anything that was. That goes to all the runners and volunteers and the Herbstritt family.
Ultimately, this race is to honor Jeremy and his love of life and people and running. If his family feels this was accomplished then this was the most successful race ever.
