After a foggy start, the sun broke out and provided the perfect backdrop to a wonderful tribute to Jeremy Herbstritt, who was an active part of the Bellefonte community before his life was taken from us in the Virginia Tech tragedy. There was no better way to carry on his legacy, then gathering as a community to share each others company and enjoy the outdoors.
In Bellefonte, Spring Street is just one of the many intimidating hills surrounding this quaint Victorian town. It was incorporated into the race course because Jeremy, loved a challenge. He ran the course as part of his training during his xc years at Bellefonte Area High School and often when he would return home from college.
Over 200 runners/walkers traversed in his footsteps this past Saturday, up and down the streets of Bellefonte in the 3rd annual Herbie's Hometown Loop. Dave Moore, State College, glided up Spring Street on his way to a record breaking finish in 21:59 followed closely by Sam Borchers in 22:16. Rounding out the top three and first masters finisher was Patrick Singletary, State College in 22:46.
On the women's side, Meira Minard, State College, cruised in with a time of 26:13, followed by Anne Skulas-Ray in 28:32 and Stephanie Herbstritt, Bellefonte in 28:43. The first master's woman was Christine Rodgers, Bellefonte in an impressive 30:24.
All proceeds from the event benefit the "Jeremy Herbstritt Memorial Fund". The family hopes to achieve its goal of building a track, in Jeremy's name in the Bellefonte community. The vision is for a place the community can come to run or walk, share time with friends and family, work together for community causes and educate and spend time with their children outdoors.
