2007 Tussey Teaser #2: 4th Annual Tussey-to-Whipple 11-Miler
Revival Run
April 7, 2007
by Mike Casper
A light breeze wafted about and the mercury was stuck in the
teens Saturday morning as 16 runners thumbed their noses at Old Man Winter and took
on the Tussey-to-Whipple 11 Miler. Master Winter blew a few flurries around
here and there but it didn’t amount to much. Andrew Webb took advantage of the
mild weather and dry surface to click off a new record for the distance,
snipping nearly 2 minutes from the time posted by Denny Simonetti in 2005. Monika
Modest unmodestly chopped more than 7 minutes from Susan Gillmor’s leading 2005
time. Tim Spigelmyer has improved his time the last two years, this time
shaving 51 seconds from his 2006 time. Bob Boozer snipped 27 seconds off his
2006 effort. Recovering from a bout with plantar fasciitis, three-time
Mountainback ultra finisher Joe Shuta bested his time from 2005. More
accustomed of late to marathon diaper changing, Mike Casper was quite satisfied
with his first jaunt over 5 miles in months. This was his first timed run on
this route since the late nineties when he didn’t hear race director Bob
Crowe’s explicit directions, stopped in the first straightaway to tighten his
shoe laces, missed the turn onto Laurel Run Road, kept trying to catch up with
the pack, and logged an extra 3 miles en route to Whipple. Like most of the
rest of us, prior to the start Mara Modest and Dana Kracaw wondered, “What are
we doing here?” They nevertheless covered the distance at a very steady pace.
Taking the opportunity to put in a few extra clicks, Marvin Hall was spotted
before 8 a.m. on his way from Whipple
to the start, so Marv’s time was actually recorded after an (at least) 11-mile
warm-up. Regrets to all who wished for the water placed at mile 7. Some
unscrupulous (or mighty thirsty) driver-by nabbed the water even before Andrew
got to it. Gotta camouflage it next time. Back at Tussey new snow was blowing furiously
across the landscape as runners got back in their cars and turned on the heat.
Ah, Spring!
The next Teaser on May 6, the Sidewinder 10K, features age-
