Tussey Teaser #4 - Treaster Kettle Test-Your-Mettle 10.6 Miler
June 10, 2006 - Colyer Lake
by Mike Casper
It was very cool and breezy as 23 runners tested their
mettle on the tough hills of Treaster Kettle Road
between Colyer Lake
and Bear Meadows Natural Area. For some this free Tussey Teaser was a training
run, for others a chance to test their speed on challenging terrain. This run
takes place on Leg #10 of the Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK 50 Mile Relay and
Ultramarathon, but for this run runners would cover the route, then turn around
and run back to its start. The cool air was ideal for a demanding run, and the
times showed it.
The first six runners blasted the course mark set last year
by Ken Davis. Artie Gilkes started late but finished fastest, followed closely
in time by David Moore. Meira Minard blazed a new women’s record as the sixth overall
to finish. Bob Boozer bettered his 2005 time on this course by more than 13
minutes, Eric Gold lopped 12 minutes from his effort last year, and Jim Myers
shaved 2-1/2 minutes off his previous time. Bob Crowe turned in a respectable
effort on his first 10+ mile run since the March 2004 Egg Hill race. Christine
Rice, who had completed her first 10K just 4 weeks earlier (the hilly
Beidleheimer Sidewinder), took everything the course could hand out and still finished
smiling. Kim Faulds and Meredith Shubin went out for a consistent pace and kept
it throughout the ups and downs.
Special thanks to Bob Crowe for help with course setup and
Kelly Twomey for staffing the vital water station at Bear Meadows.
The fifth and last run of the Tussey Teasers series, the
Bear Meadows Made in the Shade 7.0 or 10.6 Miler (you choose the distance),
will take place on July 1. The run is free, timed, and door prizes will be
distributed. For details, visit the NVRC’s online calendar at www.nvrun.com/calendar.html.
All runners completing all five Tussey Teasers are eligible
for a special prize.
The 7th annual Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK 50 Mile Relay
and Ultramarathon will take place October
7, 2006. Online registration and details are available at www.tusseymountainback.com.
