Tussey Teaser #3 - 5th Annual Beidleheimer Sidewinder 10K

The warming May days went south for this year’s Sidewinder. Though the race’s move to a Saturday morning promised a break from balmy Sunday afternoon temperatures, few would have predicted the  foggy, misty morning and mid-40s breezes that greeted the runners gathered at Whipple Dam to “get on the bus” for a ride to the starting line. The WAVA system was introduced for this year’s age and gender graded event, giving a more statistically accurate leveling of times for both lady runners and those under 20 or over 35 years old. More than half of all participants were masters runners. Two teen runners completed the rolling, mostly gravel course.
 
Trophies went to the first five adjusted time finishers. Terry Reid, 49, who finished 6th in actual time, edged out Bob Radzwich, 39, who finished first, by 9 seconds for the race title. Patrick Singletary, 42, edged out Jeff Smucker, 42, by 12 seconds to take third. Bob Jones, 53, placed fifth, just ahead of Andrew Webb, 43. In the women’s results, Pam Scott, 46, placed 11th in adjusted results and edged out Sarah Farrant, 35, for the women’s title. Stacey Falkner, 37, edged out Vanelle Tarter, 21, for third.
 
All three teams beat the winning team time from the 2007 race. The Juniata Valley Striders took home the first place trophy.
 
Return efforts on the course often yield falling times as runners know better what to expect. Comparing actual times among those who also ran last year’s race, Duane Serpentine, 37, shaved 30 cool seconds off his time, and Marty Mazur, 51, peeled off 27 seconds. Kim Daniels, 28, took nearly 40 seconds off last year’s time, Paul Mount, 39, zipped almost a minute from his, and Pam Scott took 1:44 off her 2007 posting. Sarah Farrant knocked 6+ minutes off her 2007 time, and Denise Weaver, 43, chopped over 7 minutes from last year’s effort. The youngest participant, Nikita Fedkin, 14, already a three-time runner of the Sidewinder, took 3:45 off his 2007 time. Bob Boozer, 53, is the only runner who has run all five Sidewinders. Bob Rice, 54, is back on the racing scene after a brief hiatus.

Free runs on June 7 and June 29 will round out the Tussey Teasers schedule. The next run, the Treaster Kettle Test-Your-Mettle 10.6 Miler, will depart from Colyer Lake out-and-back style to cover the ups and downs of Treaster Kettle Road. It’s cost-free, except for the calories you should plan to burn.
