9th Annual First Night State College
5K Resolution Run
December 31, 2005
December 31 was a nice day in State College,
with a high of 38 degrees and occasional sunshine. By 6:30 race
time, temperatures had not
dropped much, but a misty drizzle filled the air. Nevertheless, 499
runners registered for the
ninth annual First Night Resolution Run and enthusiastically took off
from
College and Allen Sts. and looped under the streetlights of the Penn
State campus.
Stephen
Gross of Berkeley, California won the race by a narrow two
seconds over local bicycle entrepreneur Erik Scott, who also placed in
the
Nittany Valley Half Marathon earlier in the month. Gross was the
top runner at State High in the late 90s and is now a graduate student
and competitive triathloner in the Berkeley area. Former Penns
Valley runner Ben Niebel, now running for Penn State, was third.
Another out-of-towner, Donna Paliska of Fort Knox, KY, won the women’s
race; the former
Donna Fidler was a Penn State
runner who tied for first in the 1998 Half Marathon. Last year’s
winner Katherine Ward, a State High
star, was second, and State High teammate Edel Crowe was third.
Edel
is the latest of a series of Crowe
runners, whose mother Sue was a perennial winner and age-group winner
in
local
races, and whose father Bob was also a fine runner with many Boston
appearances.
Another Crowe to watch will be Edel's 13-year old brother Paul, who
finished first in his age group and 14th overall in 18:14.
Teresa Timmerman
may have to be retired from Costumes competition. Her third win,
this year solo, was an Orange
Bowl getup appropriate for Penn State’s
football game on Jan. 3.
