6th Annual First Night State College 5K Resolution Run

December 31, 2002

     In spite of a slight drizzle, warm temperatures brought record numbers to the 6th annual New Year’s Eve 5K run. The 466 entrants by far exceeded any previous race. We had planned on a maximum of 350, so our food supplies and finishing chute area were overwhelmed. We were only able to time 225 runners before the finishing area became hopelessly backed-up; we apologize if we didn’t record your time. We hope that the many families who ran as families had a good time. If we missed any finishers, let me know – eggler@geosc.psu.edu. Next year I hope we’ll be able to record the finishing order and times with “chips,” the system used at the Arts Festival 10K Race.
     Former Penn State runner Ian Hahn of State College won the race in 15:58, and John Niederhaus was second. First woman finisher was Laurie Gordon of Newton, NJ, her fourth straight win. Last year she ran as Laurie Parton and was proposed to at the starting line by Guy Gordon. Guy again took the masters division, followed by Gary Ishler of Lewistown. Second woman overall was Sherri Doebler of Williamsport. The women masters division was taken by Rebecca Herman of Altoona, who took home the same prize at the Nittany Valley Half Marathon earlier this month. Second in that division was Diane Blyler of Hollidaysburg.
     The best-costume plaque went to Annie Ericson and her friends, who were a fast-moving pack of reindeer.
     Thanks to First Night State College and the race’s sponsor, the Geisinger Medical Group. Thanks to the race volunteers, who didn’t need to brave arctic temperatures this year, but nevertheless took time out of their New Year’s Eve schedules – Gerry Glyde, Dean McHenry, Anne and Greg Fredericks, Steve and Carol Gentry, Joe and Sandy Niebel, Morgan Wasikonis, Marvin Hall, Teresa Timmerman, who handled registration BOTH Monday and Tuesday as well as being one of those reindeer, Ron Cunfer, Rachel and Bill Smith, Dana Bauer, a Geisinger volunteer whose name I didn’t obtain, Willis Eggler, and the race co-founder, Tom Cali.
