5th Annual First Night State College 5K Resolution Run

December 31, 2001

The temperature was in the high teens with a light dusting of snow for the 5th
and largest First Night race.  There were 348 registered runners or walkers
and 326 finishers for the race that begins at the corner of College and Allen
in downtown State College ,amid ice sculptures and festive crowds, and loops
through the semi-darkened Penn State campus, ending back on College Avenue in
front of St. Paul's Methodist Church, the race headquarters.

There was a new men's winner this year, Paul Fritzsche of Boulder, CO,
followed closely by last year's winner, James Wiggin of Warriors Mark. The
women's winner for the third straight year was Laurie Parton of Newton, NJ.
Guy Gordon, also of Newton, again won the masters division, followed by his
friend Bill Bosmann of Sparta, NJ, who ran a fast 18:12 at 51. The perennial
women's masters winner was Sue Crowe of State College, edging out master Betty
Makin of Altoona by four seconds.

The highlight of the race was the marriage proposal by Guy to Laurie at the
starting line two minutes before the gun. Surprised and happy, she accepted.
Both recovered quickly to finish strong in the race itself. We are pleased
that Guy chose this event for his proposal; the race and First Night have
meant a lot to them.

The race couldn't have happened without support from the First Night
organization and the Nittany Valley Running Club, co-sponsors. NVRC volunteers
Greg and Anne Fredericks, Steve and Carol Gentry, Marvin Hall, Tom Cali,
Sharon Shriver, Dove Erich, Joe and Sandy Niebel, Liz and Katie Kisenwether,
Amy Strasner, Bill Bahnfleth, Betsey Eggler, and Nancy Miller came through in
a big way.
