24TH ANNUAL ARTS FESTIVAL RACES - 10K

There were 412 finishers -- 280 male, 132 female -- of the 24th annual Nittany Valley Arts Festival 10K road race on the Penn State University Park campus.  Overall winners were 20-year-old Steve Walsh from Center Square in 31:59, and 19-year-old Erin Carlson of State College in 39:43.

Many  other runners from State College  had excellent performances.  To name just a few, they included  Kati Kostyak (2nd overall) and Sue Crowe (at age 43, a five-time winner of this race, and 3rd overall),  Kevin McGouldrick (5th), and Damian Kellogg (9th). Two 18-year-old former State High runners took honors in the 15-19 age groups for males and females:  Steve Gross  in 34:01 and Hilary Burbank in 45:19.  In the always competitive 35-39 men's category, the local sweep was complete, with Matt Smith first at 34:59, and Scott Roycroft and  Penn State men's gymnastics coach Randy Jepson second and third, both in well under 38 minutes.
