2007 Nittany Valley Running Club Indoor Mile #4 and 3000m Race

by Marty Mazur

The final Indoor Mile Series Races capped the best Indoor season the NVRC has had to date. A record field of 40 entrants competed, 32 in two heats of the mile and 8 in a heat of the 3000 meter run. In order to accommodate runners who wanted to run both the Mile and the 3000, the slow heat of the mile was run first. Runners who wanted to do both got to run in the slow mile heat and rest during the fast heat.

The "slow heat" ended up not so slow, with Steve Williams battling Tomas Persson to finish in 5:19.85 and 5:20.46, respectively. Meira Minard, the Series second placed woman, was third in 5:34.72. Persson and Minard later ran the 3000. Marty Klanchar was the top Masters finisher, setting a personal season best of 5:50.76.

The fast heat was very fast. Matt Groves made his Indoor Mile debut and took the heat in 4:34.30 while chased by Sean Clark (4:34.49) and overall Series winner Matt Manfred (4:37.93). Manfred ran very consistently throughout the series, beating his previous series time by 0.01 seconds! Dave Felice took the Masters crown by capping his 4:49 performance of two meets ago by finishing fourth in 4:46.58. Louise Miltich battled Bethany Gunther for the fastest women's time. Gunther was first in 5:29.65, but Miltich's time of 5:31.05 earned her the overall female Series crown.

The 3000 meter run featured Dave Moore striding easily to victory in 9:04.75. Marc Paulhamus also broke 10 minutes, finishing second in 9:58.65. And Bill Maloney was third in 10:19.45. The next five finishers had all just finished Heat 1 of the mile, yet all still managed to record fine 3000 meter times, with Tomas Persson nearly taking Maloney in 10:20.65.
