Tussey Teaser #1 - 5th Annual Laurel Run Switchbacker 10K
March 15, 2008
by
The weather was mild under bright skies as a record 30 runners toed up
at
Tussey Mountain Ski Area to climb the steady 3.1-mile grade up Laurel
Run Road
to the crest at the Mid-State Trail crossing and wind their way back
down. Only
29 came down again – Marty Klanchar was tacking on additional miles and
kept
going when he reached the crest of the road. The road was mostly dry
and free
of ice, and the mountain’s contours were outlined by the bare trees
flanked by
snow. Of those who did this run last year, no one but leader Costas
Maranas
improved over those times, though most weren’t far off. Shaun Wood
shaved some
time off his 2006 posting. Sarah Farrant led the women's field. This
was an
affirming first timed outing of the year for many. The next Teaser run,
April
13, will give runners a chance to run past the crest of the road and
tack on
downhill and gentle flat for a total of 11 miles.
