2006 Tussey Teaser #1 -  3rd annual Tussey Switchbacker 10K

Unseasonably warm temperatures and a deep blue sky made for a record-setting day at the 3rd annual Tussey Switchbacker 10K.  After 2 years where snow and ice lined the course, foul weather took a break for race day this year, as it felt more like mid-spring than late winter. Temperatures climbed into the lower 50's as a record number 18 runners (including Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK Ultra-marathoner Joe Shuta) towed the line for the 10 a.m. race start.  Other than some muddy spots, course conditions were excellent for the race - the first in a series of 5 Tussey Teaser runs. The "Switchbacker" is an out-and-back (more like an "up" and "back  down") on leg #1 of the Tussey mOUnTaiNBACK 50 mile course.
 
Terry Reid of Bellefonte easily traversed the challenging course, smashing the previous record by over 3 minutes with a time of 41:56. Boyd Brumbaugh of Boalsburg and Tim Spigelmyer of McClure followed in 2nd and 3rd places with times of 43:25 and 44:15, respectively. Tara Murray of State College was the first of 3 females to cross the line.  She finished in 48:34, besting the old mark by 2 and a half minutes. Morgan Wasikonis came in 2nd at 51:56 and Janet Egerer was 3rd at 59:24. Additionally, Janet also easily set the record for having traveled the farthest distance to run in the race as she resides in Newport, Rhode Island.
 
As the runners gathered to chat afterwards, they compared their turn-around times and enjoyed the lovely weather.  They left with smiles on their faces, looking forward to next month's Tussey Teaser #2 - the Tussey to Whipple 11 Miler on April 9th.
