The rain held off and paved the way for a fun filled day of running and fitness for 77 elementary and middle school students at Bellefonte Area Middle School. After visiting the NIKE booth for a bag of goodies, saying hello to the dairy princess and cow and having their faces painted courtesy of the Bellefonte cheerleaders, it was time to pin on their numbers and head out to the starting line to stretch with the Bellefonte Area High School cross-country team and special guest Hanky the clown. While their children were getting ready to run, parents took advantage of the free blood pressure screenings provided by Jen and Margaret Herbstritt.
The first race of the day was the ¼ mile race for children in kindergarten and younger. The youngest finisher for the girls was Grace Bodner, 3 years old from Bellefonte and 2 year old, Caleb Rossman, from Bellefonte. The top female finisher was Tessa Hipple in 2:16 and the first male finisher was Mitchell Etter in 1:49.
The ½ mile race for first and second grade was next with Natasha Fedkina taking top female finisher in 3:32 and Jake Etter finishing 1st for the second year in a row in 3:31. Immediately following that race was the ½ mile race for 3rd and 4th graders. Gwendolyn Lowery was the top female finisher in 3:37 and Patrick Irwin was the top male in 3:15.
The next race was the mile race for children in sixth grade and younger. Danielle Feffer took top honors in 7:26 and Ivan Pavlov was the top male in 7:59.
The final race of the day was the 1.5 mile run for eighth grade and younger. Ashley Ford was the top female finisher in 10:15 and Nathan Kruis pulled away for the winner of the male category in 10:13.
The top five finishers in each race received medals and all finishers received a ribbon. All runners were greeted at the finish line by an enthusiastic crowd of parents, friends and members of the Bellefonte Area High School cross-country team.
A special thanks goes out to Dave Eggler from the Nittany Valley Running Club who provided timing and results.
