"Carter wins half marathon"

Eric Carter, the Penn State cross country runner who placed ninth at the recent National Collegiate Athletic Association championships, won the State College Half Marathon held last weekend.

His time was 1:08:38, which was 21 seconds better than second-place finisher Rick McGarry. Steve Koons was third in 1:10 flat.

Carter, McGarry, and Koons took the lead from the beginning and stayed together until Carter ran the 11th mile of the 13-mile race in 4:40. McGarry was second in last year's race. The course record of 1:07:06 is held by Bill Reifsnyder, who didn't run this year because he was competing in the Honolulu Marathon. [Reifsnyder, in fact, made his marathon debut the following day in Honolulu, finishing second in 2:14:38 behind Ibrahim Hussein of Kenya, who won in a course record 2:12:08.]

Evelynn Ellis of State College won the women's race in 1:30:51, nearly three minutes ahead of Marleen Haverty.

Ninety-five runners competed and five age-group course records were set.
