1st Annual Linden Loop 5 Mile Run, Walk, or Bike

The new 5-mile race in the area started with a flourish, and on a freshly certified course, with about 100 registrations. The event offers a bike, run or walk option, and runners have a chance to bike it an hour before the run, which some used as a warm-up or test of fitness. While a few had trained on the course in a counterclockwise direction, logistics has the race run as the clock turns, heading east on Brush Valley Road, south on Rock Hill Road and west on Linden Hall Road. Hills make for a test in the early going, followed by a mostly flat, slightly winding finish. Cool breezes and upper 50s temps in the late morning made some wonder what to wear for the run, but when the thinning clouds gave way to sun, the gentle breezes and patches of shade were more than welcome.
 
Twenty bicycles covered the route. Bill Rossman covered the course in 14:20, a good minute ahead of the next rider. Most two-wheelers were out for a fun ride.
 
Sixty-four runners completed the footrace. Bob Radzwich, 38, held off Patrick Singletary, 42, by 30 seconds to win in 28:41, with Greg Dillon, 44, not far behind. Cheryl Capone, 36, won the women’s race in 33:36, followed by Marcie Itle, 22, and Alissa Popovich, 22.
 
The youngest runner was Maddy Falcone, 13, who covered the distance in 1:10:19. On the other end of the scale, congrats to Evelyn Kapes, 66, who finished in 1:10:18. The men’s race had no one under 18, but the uppermost age was represented by Bob Becker, 70, who posted 1:04:57 and Bob Shepherd, also 70, who finished in 1:10:07.

Next year’s date has already been set for the first Sunday in May - May 3, 2009. The proceeds from today’s event support the restoration of the Rock Hill School, a truly unique piece of history located about halfway around the route. A good number of visitors checked out the 1893 one-room schoolhouse, which was the site of early education for area residents until 1937.
