17th Knights of Columbus 5K - Sunday, October 14,
2007
The way this
Fall has been going, we were worried about 80 degrees and the need for
an ambulance to tag along with the runners. But real Fall arrived in
the latter part of the week and it was beautiful for the Knights race.
Over 110 runners finished the race, and nobody overheated.
Youth and age had their turns in the spotlight. Andy Cunningham led the
5K for half the race, until local Masters ace Pat Singletary took the
lead. Singletary took first in 17:41. Andy was second in 17:57. And
high schooler Peter Lin ran a solid third in 18:36. Beth Kempton relived
a bit of her high school glory as she charged up the hill on the State
High Course. Beth graduated from State High in the late 90s, ran for Penn State after that, and gained
a blue ribbon today, finishing first among females in 20:30. Sarah
Pabian, who is a Knights Race specialist, was second in 20:39. And
Natasha Fedkina, who owned the Kids Races in years past, graduated to
the big girls' course in a big way. The nine year old ran what would be
a respectable time for a high school athlete and finished third in
22:04. And knowing Natasha, I'm sure she's kicking herself for not
breaking 22. Natasha participates in the Nittany Track and Field Youth Club,
coached by her dad Mark Fedkin, 2nd place finisher Andy Cunningham, and
several other volunteer coaches. Nittany T&F kids learn to run and
compete, and have a lot of fun doing it. The proof is in the results.
Most of the top finishing youngsters are in the Nittany T&F program.
The Knights Race is the official Beginner's Race of the Nittany Valley
Running Club, and first time 5K runners were well represented. There
were 17 first timers in the field and they took the challenges very
well. Here's where I break the secret to the newbies: The Knights
Course is not an easy
course! And you all made the grade. Now go set a PR in one of the
"easy" campus races this Fall!
The Knights Race is also a family race,
and many families took more than their fair share of the prizes. The
Fedkins were standouts, but the Balkeys, Lanagans, Hutchisons, Colyers,
Henrys, Challises, Shireys, Langelaans, and several other families were
well represented in the 5K and the Kids Races.
The Kids Races were fun to watch, as always. The quarter-mile had a
huge spread of age (3 to 8) and finishing times. The half-mile kids
were closely packed and very competitive. Race Director Marty Mazur admonished the
kids to "Fight fair" as they made the turn at the half-way point. "No
biting!" It almost came to that as Mark Henry and Seth Balkey battled
it out for third, flailing elbows and honing hockey hip-checks. These
moves will come in handy when they run cross-country in high school.
I'm sure Seth, who finished fourth, will be sharpening his elbows for
next time.
Race director's Marty and Vicky Mazur would like to thank the many
volunteers for all the race day help they received. The large number of
volunteers helped everything go smoothly. Volunteers included Dave
Eggler, Greg Fredericks, John Sheakoski, Amy Paster, Marv Hall, Marty
Klanchar, Steve Bodner, Lance Bland, Laura Shackelton, Theresa Derk,
Ron Saluga, Mandy Misner, Dan Eck, Dave DeGroote, Mark Scott, Costas
Maranos, Jim Taylor, Andy and Christina Mazur, and no doubt several
others
whose names I'm forgetting, but not their contributions.
Marty and Vicky are also grateful to their sponsors. With their
help it
was possible to raise $1400 for the two beneficiaries of the
race.
The Knights of Columbus generously allow the NVRC to host the race in
their Hall, and top that off with a nice cash gift to help defray race
expenses. Tom Cali is always generous with a cash gift. Weis Markets
give store
gift certificates which are used to provide refreshment to the runners.
CCDA Water donated bottled water. Rapid Transit Sports provided race
numbers and bags for the race packets. Rosewood Silkscreening always
does a wonderful job picking out the colors for the race T-shirts, turn
out a great product, and are always very helpful. Appalachian Outdoors
sponsored the Kids Races and provided some nice prizes for the 5K.
Numerous local businesses provided prizes: Rapid Transit
Sports
(Special thanks to Jay and Terry!),T.G.I.Friday's, Mount Nittany
Wheelworks, the Boal
Mansion and Columbus Chapel, Webster's Books, Penn
Skates, Northland Bowl, and Home Delivery Pizza.
