15th Knights of Columbus 5K - Sunday, October 9, 2005

The Fall rains that drenched the area the last few days departed and left a beautiful day for
a run. About 90 runners were dried out and ready to go. The Knights race is the Nittany
Valley Running Club's official Beginners Race. Ten runners who had never before run a 5K
or more came to cover the course. There was also a fair sampling of State College's
seasoned elite. And, as always, Tom Kleban was there to cheer the runners closing in on
the finish line. 

The overall winner was Max Feldman, who completed the course in 16:45. Andy
Cunningham gave Feldman a good challenge for the first mile, but after that, it was all Max.
Tom "Mr. Fountain of Youth" Cali was third. This year's first and second place women traded
places from their finishes last year. Meira Minard was first in 20:18 and Sarah Pabian was
second in 21:08. Martha Michael took third in 21:41.

We had five family teams this year. The best race of the day was between the Fedkin Family
and the Balkey Family. Steve Balkey had to rely on his kids after he was barely bested at the
finish by Mark Fedkin. The Balkeys took the family prize by a mere 16 seconds when the top
three finishing times of each family were totalled.

The beginning runners all turned in quite respectable times. They must've all been on the
NVRC Couch-to-5K Training Program.

There were Kids Races for the first time this year. The crowd for the inaugural races was
small, but enthusiastic. Natasha Fedkin won the quarter mile in 89.3 seconds, this after
turning in a stellar performance in the 5K. And she's only 7!

Race director's Marty and Vicky Mazur would like to thank the many volunteers for all the
race day help they received. The large number of volunteers helped everything go smoothly.
The volunteers were Greg Fredericks, who timed the race; Dave Eggler, did the timing with
Greg Fredericks; Liz Kisenwether, who directed the Kids Races; Mike Dooris, our utility man;
Loida Escote-Carlson, who was indispensable at the registration table, Steve Fast, John
Daley, Shaun Woods, Judd Michael, Sarah Pabian, Joe and Sandy Niebel, John Sheakoski,
Mike Casper, Kathy Heller, Mark Fedkin, and Andy and Christina Mazur. We'd also like to
thank Ashley Bird, the Centre County Grange Fair Dairy Queen, and her Mom, for their great
support. Ashley helped in many ways, and was the official starter.

Marty and Vicky are also grateful to their sponsors. With their help it was possible to raise over
$1000 for the two beneficiaries of the race. The Knights of Columbus generously allow the
NVRC to host the race in their Hall, and top that off with a nice cash gift to help defray race
expenses. Tom Cali is always generous with a cash gift. Weis Markets give store gift
certificates which are used to provide refreshment to the runners. CCDA Water donated bottled
water. Rapid Transit Sports provided race numbers and bags for the race packets. Rosewood
Silkscreening always does a wonderful job picking out the colors for the race T-shirts, turn out a
great product, and are always very helpful, and Appalachian Outdoors sponsored the Kids
Races. Numerous local businesses provided prizes: Rapid Transit Sports (Special thanks to
Jay and Terry!), Mount Nittany Wheelworks, the Boal Mansion and Columbus Chapel,
Nittany Bank, Webster's Books, Penn Skates, Tussey Mountain Fun Center, Northland Bowl,
Applebee's, Red Lobster, Red's Steamed Cheeseburgers, Home Delivery Pizza, and Olive
Garden.
