NVRC CVIM Boston Marathon Teams - April 17, 2006

The Nittany Valley Running Club had a big presence at this year's Boston Marathon. The big story, as it's been for the last few years, is the Nittany Valley Running Club's sponsorship of teams that are raising money for the Centre Volunteers in Medicine. John Domico started the fundraising idea several years ago when he ran solo and got pledges totalling about $3000. Last year, 3 NVRC teams ran and raised around $30,000. Then numbers aren't in yet this year, but it looks to be an even bigger success. The NVRC fielded 4 teams, one in every team category: Men's and Women's Open and Masters. The Women's Open team did exceptionally well, finishing 8th overall.

Several team members also placed well individually. The highest placing NVRC member was Nate Harkins, who finished 58th overall in 2:32:19. Nate was on the NVRC Mens Open team. He was also 46th in his age group. On the women's side, Martha Nelson, Monika Modest, and Paula Jech did particularly well. Martha Nelson finished 1523rd overall in 3:04:51. She was 70th among women and 58th in the open female division. Monika finished 5947th in 3:29:15 and was 15th in the female 50-59 age group. Monika was on the NVRC Women's Masters team. Paula Jech finished 14060th in 4:04:31 and was 12th in the 60-69 age group. Paula also ran for the NVRC Women's Masters team.

An added note: S. Mark Courtney of Grove City, an NVRC member whose company Runner's High times many of our local races, finished 296th overall and 1st in the Men's 50-59 age group in the remarkable time of 2:46:44.
