Minutes of October 5, 2004 NVRC Meeting.
The regular meeting of the Nittany Valley
Running Club was held on Tuesday, October 5, at the Hi-Way Pizza on Westerly
Parkway. In attendance were
Jim Taylor, Marty Klanchar, Mike
Casper, Bob Boozer, Boyd Brumbaugh, Amy Paster, Mark Fedkin, and Marty
Mazur.
As usual, the pizza was fabulous and the beer cold.
There was a lot
of discussion about the just-completed Tussey race. Major
success there. Loads of fun. Financial details not yet done. Mike
Casper was
recuperating from a very hectic weekend and so was not present to give
a
report.
Marty Mazur was
anticipating the biggest Knights of Columbus 5K race since he
and Vicky revived it in 2000. Over 40 pre-registered, signaling
possibly over
100 runners, a threshold he's been trying to crack. It looks like the
race
might be popular with beginners, as hoped.
In more
disturbing news, Dave Eggler reported that he is near the end of his
ropes in trying to get approval from the PSU Athletic Department for
use of the
IM Building for December's Half-Marathon. The University people are
claiming
that they are now only enforcing a long-standing policy with respect to
use of
facilities. We can use the streets and outdoor steps of the building,
just not
the inside. Because the race is in December, we need to set up
computers and
registration inside. The "policy" might also have ramifications for
other campus races. The Club is currently in discussion with University
officials, including those from other departments with facilities near
the
start/finish, to resolve this problem. The Club has generally had
a good
relationship with the University in the past, with benefits to both
local
runners, and to the University itself. It would be a shame if
bureaucratic
short-sightedness got in the way of the continued success of a great
local
tradition. [Editors Note: Since the meeting, some progress has been
made on
this front. Details will be publicized as soon as available.]
There was a
brief report on the imminent update of the NVRC web site by an IST
student. Marty Mazur and Mike Dooris are currently reviewing the very
fine work
Matt has been doing.
Next Meeting: December 7.
