Cool temps and blue skies early in the day created perfect conditions for this 8th Beidleheimer Sidewinder 10K. Forty-six runners completed the 6.2 miles on Beidleheimer and Greenlee Roads back to Whipple Dam beach. This year Fullington provided cushy tour buses for the pre-race ferry to the start line.
Masters men filled eight of the first 12 adjusted spots, while nearly half of the day's participants were women. Many of the runners were first-timers to this course. Tom Cali, 56, and Meira Minard, 37, took first honors for the men and women, with the adjustment. Costas Maranas, Matt Smith and Jeff Smucker took home the second through fifth hardware. Sarah Sweeney and Tara Murray took second and third among the women.
Team results saw the Fallen Angels win, with the Whipple Wacers taking second place honors.
Post-race fare featured party subs from Tussey Teaser series sponsor Subway Restaurants as well as dozens of donuts courtesy of volunteer Bob Rice. Drawing prizes included Doan's Bones BBQ certificates, Happy Valley Rita's coupons, coffee and books from Webster's Bookstore Café.
Thanks to Bob for single-handedly staffing the water station, to Bob, Dave DeGroote and Stephen Ast for assistance with registration and recording finishers, to Ann Van Kuren for picking up the party subs, and to Dave Eggler for providing timing and results. Tom Cali had the best adjusted time, and led the Fallen Angels to a Team win.
Meira Minard came without a team this year, but had the fastest female time and was second overall in adjusted time
Team champs the Fallen Angels: Dean Capone, Angel Burd, Jim Myers, Marty Mazur, and Alan Effrig. Tom Cali was doing a cooldown run back up the hill to fetch his car.
