February 6, 2015

The final meet of the 2015 Indoor Mile Series finally saw a record fall, but it wasn't in the mile run. Lauren Philbrook, a past series standout, became the first female to run sub-10 in the 3000 meter run. Lauren smashed Cassi Knight's four year-old record of 10:01.24, finishing first in the female field in 9:57.89. Not far behind her and close to the old standard was Marrina Orrson in 10:03.84. Third among the 5 women who ran the 3K was Ariane Abadi in 10:59.86. In the men's race, Mark Pulea won in 9:07.12, followed by John Lacy in second in 9:10.81 and Timothy Appman in third in 9:12.96. First among Men's Masters finishers was Dan Przeniczny (who had just run the mile moments earlier), clocking 9:47.15. His fast mile time may have cost him a Masters 3K record. Dan had penciled in an estimate of 9:25 for the 3K, which would have been a good deal faster than the 3K Master's record of 9:37.01.

There were three heats of the mile. Steven Hanna somehow got placed in the slow heat, rather than the second which would have been more appropriate competition. Runners are sometimes placed in slower heats when the 3K is being run to give them more time to rest for the 3K. But Hanna was not entered in the 3K. Hanna ran away from the field taking the heat in 4:58.54. Second was Tony Kwasnica in 5:31.82. Tony Przeniczny was third in 5:40.30. Judd Michael paced Tara Murray to a PR of 5:48.23. In the second heat, Dan Przeniczny was also inappropriately placed, but Dan was on his way to the 3K. "Dan P" won the heat in 4:38.70. Second was Nikita Fedkin in a seasons best 4:56.80. Matt Pennock was third in 4:59.92. Rod Stahl was smelling the finish line and desperate to spring to the finish under 5 minutes, but stumbled and fell on the final straight. Megan Marshall passed him to finish in 5:07.37 and take first among women (and the Mile Series first as well). Rod dusted himself off and made it across the line in 5:10.34.

In the fast heat, runners went out in a slow, barely sub-4:40 pace, but kicked it up as the race progressed. In the final lap, Doug Jordan put on a ferocious kick to ensure not just a win, but a sub-4:30 (the first in the Series this year) and the overall Mile Series crown. Dan Craighead was second in 4:35.54 and Jordan Holder was third in 4:37.81.

The winner of this year's Predicted Mile was Tony Przeniczny, who was 0.31 seconds off his predicted mile finish.
