First Night 2011-2012

As I am writing this story, it's 12^o outside.  But on race evening a few days ago, the temperature was 45^o. That may account, in part, for record numbers for this event: 1,056 registered, and 978 finished. Attendance might also be up because the race was featured in a short piece in the December 2011 Runners World.

Coming in first and second in the race were Caleb Wakeley, 16, from Glenshaw, and Kelly Fermoyle, 25, from Minneapolis; both ran sub-16. Kyle Ragan was third, and coming in 4th overall and first mens masters was Patrick Singletary from State College. This was Pat's 4th straight win in the mens masters category. The first woman was Meira Minard, the central Pennsylvania trail race champion, who ran a First Night PR. Second was Beth Herndon, and third young (13) Natasha Fedkina, who ran her first sub-20 road race. Beth won last year's race, but said this year she wasn't in that kind of shape and ran to pace someone. That someone and Beth both ran 19:01.

Best costume award went to a group of young State College High runners who were dressed (or undressed) as gladiators. They probably appreciated the warm weather.

The race couldn't happen without the logistical support of Rick Bryant and Carol Baney of the First Night organization and the volunteers: at registration on the 30th: John and Cindy Wilcock, Tom Cali (co-founder with me 15 years ago of this race), and Kim Nelson; registration on the 31st: John Wilcock (who donned his wedding dress and ran), Greg Fredericks, John Pringle and family, John Domico and son, Kathy Koetje-Simin (who ran), Rich Olsen (who donned his firefighter gear and ran), and Tom Cali (who donned his tux and ran in the Wilcock-Mike Weyandt wedding party); food pickup: Jean Brownstead; food table: Nancy Miller and Willis Eggler; at corners during the race: Tim Kline, Greg Fredericks, Judd, Ava, and Davis Michael, Steve & Carol Gentry (their nth year at that spot), and Marie Lampeter; finish area: Tim Kline; and the most critical job of all, when everyone else has disappeared, cleanup: Tom Cali, Willis Eggler, and Carl and Nancy Miller.
