Wahoo Beginners Group

The Wahoo Beginners group wants to encourage beginners to start running, stick with it, set some goals, and have fun all the while. The runs are for all-comers and all abilities, whether you're a total novice or a long time runner that wants a non-competitive workout with a great group of people! Our group got its name when Jerry Steffy, a past group leader, mistakenly referred to the Yahoo Discussion Group as the "Wahoo Group!"

The Beginners group was dormant for a couple of years, but in June of 2015, Renee Kotch took leadership of it. Renee is starting to get regular runs together. Keep an eye on the Calendar and subscribe to the Wahoo email list. If you've always wanted to start a jogging program with a little direction, now is your chance. All you've got to do is show up!

If you have any questions about the runs, or if you'd like to help out with the runs, contact Renee at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Wahoo Beginners Running Group: Starting Up Again

June 9, 2015

Renee Kotch and the Wahoo Beginners Group had a new beginning. Nine runners showed up at Tudek Park for a couple of easy miles. The consensus so far has been to try and keep a steady 11:30ish minutes per mile pace. People seem to like the ability to stop after 1-2 loops or turn around when they feel they're at their halfway point. Renne is trying to be supportive of everyone's abilities. It was a lovely day!

To meet up with Renee and the group, go to the Wahoo Beginners Running group page and check out the calendar of upcoming runs.

Wahoo Beginners Running Group: Sassy Seven

July 27, 2015

We had a great run yesterday. Seven people showed up...we ran a little over 3.5 miles (although Adam was sure to remind me that he ran more because he was running circles around us !) and the picture I took was trying to capture one member that has been working toward a goal. This was her reaching it...a bit of a "Rocky" moment for her. I'm really pleased at what this group is doing for people's motivation and stamina. Having repeated runs at the same park is helping people set realistic goals and track personal records. I don't quite have the time to write a cute and funny email like the other runners, but perhaps someday I'll find the time!

Wahoo Tuesday Beginner's - 2 X 800's at PSU Track

It was great for once not to have the humidity for our track workout!  In attendance we had Kellie, Kathie, David L., Mikey, Pierce and Denise.  Everyone did a super awesome job on their 800's with well under 10 min. mi./paces. Mikey and Pierce saw the hurdles and both decided to go for it.  Happy to say both made it over without any injury :)  We have a great group of runners this year and they ALL are doing a SUPER job along with tons of fun!

Wahoo Beginners Running Group: Number 9

June 16, 2015

We did a lovely 3 miles at 13:00ish pace.  It was a lovely night and we're making great social connections! One person refused the picture and one person came right after! Nine seems to be our number right now, but it's a different nine every time, so the group is sure to coalesce.

Wahoo Beginners Running Group: Twice A Mile

August 9, 2011

We are back to our Tuesday night Beginners running group. Last night, we ran 2x1mile starting every 12 mins. We had six healthy runners and one injured runner with us last night. Out of the six, two ran with us for the first time: Amy Mensch and David Agler, Pam Scott, David Lloyd, Liz Troisi, Jerry Steffy ran the mile quicker then we all thought we could. David Agler ran with us after coming off an injury with 5:23 & 5:12, Liz Troisi ran 8:27 & 7:54, David Lloyd ran 7:42 & 7:40, Amy Mensch ran 8:24 & 8:27, and I bought up the rear with 8:12 & 11;54. Pam scott ran well and Michelle Christensen watched and hopes that she will be able to run next week with us. We will be at Boalsburg Military Museum for a 1/2 mile workout. See you next week! Jerry
