E-MAIL ADDRESS: g-lesieutre@psu.edu
BIRTH-DATE: November 29, 1958
HOMETOWN (ORIGINALLY): Royal Oak, MI; Streamwood,
IL. (We moved a lot.)
WHERE I LIVE NOW: Holmes-Foster neighborhood of
State College, PA
WHAT I DO IN LIFE AS WE KNOW IT: Teach aerospace
engineering at Penn State
NON-RUNNING HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: Playing guitar,
singing, canoeing, bicycling, camping, reading, flying, putzing around
the yard
THE BEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME: My wife,
Annie. We met in high school, in Elgin, IL. J&W, our
two boys, are pretty good, too.
A FAVORITE BOOK, MOVIE, TV OR RADIO SHOW: Crossing
to Safety (Wallace Stegner). Monty Python and the Holy
Grail. NPR.
NICKNAME (AND WHY): Hmm, old nicknames come with
baggage. Tom Cali thinks I look like Dustin Hoffman in "Marathon
Man."
IF I COULD WRITE MY OWN EPITAPH: He
refused to be miserable.
I STARTED RUNNING (WHEN, WHERE, HOW...): For
me, running was always conditioning for other
sports. Wrestling and
baseball in high school, then lacrosse and rugby in
college. I started
running for running's sake relatively recently (October 2001) to
minimize the chances of a heart attack on the trail at Philmont in 2002
(and again in 2004).
AVERAGE MILES PER WEEK: 22-38
A TYPICAL TRAINING WEEK: 4 miles Monday
(sometimes); 4-10 Tuesday (tempo); 5-8 Thursday track (speed); 9-20
weekend day (long)
PREFERRED RACE OR RACING DISTANCE: 5K (I
inevitably come out too fast, but it's over pretty quickly.)
NUMBER OF RACES PER YEAR: 2-3 (not a lot of
history here)
A GOOD 10K TIME FOR ME WOULD BE: Only have one
for time, on a hot day. Based on mile and marathon times, sub-42
would be a good time.
WHY I RUN: I
like that it's both social and solitary, and that you can test your
limits. Training with a group is enjoyable, but racing is all
you.
Also, I'm sure that sitting at a desk all day can't be good -- I
feel
better when I am in shape, and running helps keep the extra weight off.
PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT: I
paddled a canoe from Montreal to New Orleans as part of a historical
reenactment in 1976. I rode a bike from Boston to Minneapolis in
1981,
and also rode a couple of double centuries when we lived in
California.
FAVORITE SCOTCH: Lagavulin
