BIRTH-DATE: July
18
HOMETOWN (ORIGINALLY): Wharton, New Jersey
WHERE I LIVE NOW: State College, Pennsylvania
WHAT I DO IN LIFE AS WE KNOW IT: teach English classes at Penn State;
work toward a PhD in Literacy Education and Women’s Studies
NON-RUNNING HOBBIES OR INTERESTS: reading, listening to books on tape,
loving my cats Sula and Stella
A FAVORITE BOOK, MOVIE, TV OR RADIO SHOW: Lord of the Rings, Harry
Potter, Chronicles of Narnia (books first, but I like the movies, too!)
NICKNAME (AND WHY): my college coach called me sunshine because I
always had a smile
IF I COULD WRITE MY OWN EPITAPH: “She ran her race with patience and
passion”
I STARTED RUNNING (WHEN, WHERE, HOW...): on a muddy field behind my
middle school because speed exhilarated me…and I’ve been running ever
since with varying speed!
AVERAGE MILES PER WEEK: 40-60 depending on where I am in my training
cycle
A TYPICAL TRAINING WEEK: 3 days of easy running and intense plyometrics
and lifting; 1 long run (14-20 miles) or a yoga workout (I alternate
weekly long runs); 1 hill workout; 1 speed workout (sometimes a tempo
run, sometimes a shorter track workout)
PREFERRED RACE OR RACING DISTANCE: I used to say the 800m, but alas,
now I say the marathon
NUMBER OF RACES PER YEAR: 3 marathons and an assortment of shorter
races; probably 10 total
A GOOD 10K TIME FOR ME WOULD BE: 42-43 minutes
WHY I RUN: because I really get the runner’s “high” and because I still
believe running is an exhilarating physical, emotional, and spiritual
experience
PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT: I am currently on a quest to
run one marathon in each of the 50 states; so far, I’ve done 7 states,
and at this rate, I may finish by the year 2020. I
am not intimidated by long-term goalsJ.
