| Route: | 2006 Art's Festival 5K and 10K
Courses. |
||||||||||||||||||
| Mileage: | 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). | ||||||||||||||||||
| Hillage: | Mostly gently rolling, but a few
challenging hills. Both the longest continuous uphill and downhill are
on the 5K course.
Largest Continuous Climb: 100 ft.
On the second 5K, there is a short hill on Atherton St., followed by a long downhill on Park St and the bike path down to Corl Rd. There follows a series of short, but challenging uphills as the course winds along Corl Rd and an access road to the Blue Course Clubhouse. After a long gentle downhill, the course has a short but very steep uphill climb in its last 3/4-mile. The final quarter mile is a flat sprint. |

| Description: | First 5K:
Start on Burrowes Rd. in front of the Sigma Nu Fraternity house
that is on the west side and in front of West Halls. Head up Burrowes.
Bear
right on Curtin St. Continue on Curtin all the way
to University Drive and make a right. Head down University to Hastings
Rd. and go right. Take Hastings to Bigler Rd. and go right. Follow
Bigler to Pollock Rd. and go left. Take Pollock to Shortlidge Rd. and
go right. (Shortlidge is a pedestrian plaza at this point, but becomes
a road again shortly.) Take Shortlidge to Curtin Rd. and go left. Take
a
left at Fraser Alley and head down the hill to Pollock Rd. At Pollock,
make a right and continue onto the IST bridge, taking that to the
finish line just
at the other side. Second 5K: At the base of the IST bridge, make a right and head along the bike path that follows White Course Rd. and borders the large parking lot next to the IST building. Cross White Course Rd at Atherton and continue on bike path along Atherton St. Make a left on the path as it heads down Park St. Bear right on path as it continues down the hill to Corl Rd. Head left on the path as it parallels Corl Rd. At the crest of the first short hill, make a right onto service road that leads to the Blue Course Clubhouse. Follow the paved road as it winds through some woods, bearing right at a fork in this road at the top of a small hill. The road heads toward some service buildings, then veers sharply left toward the Clubhouse parking lot. Follow the road right again and continue past the Clubhouse. Follow the Clubhouse road to the bike path at the southwest end of the Blue Golf Course and make a left. Follow this path as it crosses the railroad bridge over Corl Rd. Take the second path to the left and follow the dirt road that leads to the bottom of the hill. Follow the same road as it bears right and heads up a steep hill with the White Course on the left and student housing on the right. The dirt road ends at White Course Rd., which continues straight, or to the right. Make the right on White Course. Here starts a short out-and-back leg added to make 10K. The turnaround is near the end of White Course Rd about 145 yards from the turn off the dirt road. Turn around at cone and continue back on White Course Rd. Bear right on White Course when you get back to the dirt road. Head down White Course. Make a sharp right on the sidewalk at the plaza by the IST Building and head to the finish line.

| Remarks: | The
Art's Festival 10K course has moved frequently over over the years due
to the continual on-campus construction boom. In 2004, the Nittany
Valley Running Club decided to do something new: move the 10K course to
the relatively undeveloped new West Campus. In 2005, a 5K race was
added, so designing the dual course was a challenge. The 2005 course
blends
the best of the old and the new. The new 5K is on paved roads on the
East Campus, and finishes by crossing the IST bridge onto the West
Campus. The second 5K of the 10K course is all on the West campus and
mixes a variety of
surfaces. The
NVRC hopes to be able to use variations of this scenic course for years
to come. |
